Localvore. [It’s berry season!]
I walked into the co-op on Thursday morning and this was what I saw. How could anyone that came in before me pass this enormous beauty up?! I snatched it immediately. Felt like I won a prize or something.
It’s that time of year…local fruit! First strawberries, then the others dwindle in…raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, peaches…mmm! Of course apples are last but I don’t want to get ahead of myself, save it for the cold weather.
I was trying to think of what to make with these but we ate them all before I could even decide.
Fresh strawberries are so different from packaged, imported ones. Slice a strawberry open that is out of season and you’ll see it’s almost dry inside with a white-ish center. Fresh? Bite into one that’s just been picked. Red and juicy, sweet and tart. Amazing. Hopefully the weather will be nice next week and we can go picking!
I think I’ll hold onto the next pint I pick up and make a raw strawberry cheesecake. Is there a better term for vegan cheesecake? Because its clearly not a cake made out of cheese. A nocheesecake?
…to be continued.
